Chemnitz, 18. September 2009:
At the third HPC User Meeting on the 10th of September 2009, a top-class audience and outstanding speakers from science, research and industry met for a joint exchange of experiences in the field of High Performance Computing.
The technological conference partner Intel presented the latest developments and trends in the software development department as well as on the field of Nehalem processors and the quad-core successors. Climate research and energy balances of high performance computing were combined in another presentation which called for a rethinking regarding Green IT as well as Green Science. Carrying the energy topic on, the next presentation dealt with the tense relationship of computer architecture and programming. An important hint towards politics was that the necessary capacities are often not provided in computing and HPC centres in order to ensure an optimal parallelisation and optimisation of the applications. Which challanges the research in the collision of black holes poses on high performance computing and the infrastructure of the Damiana cluster and which solutions are possible in order to facilitate the researchers work were vividly explained and discussed. Anewly picking up the topic of energy management, an HPC engineer of MEGWARE presented the possibilities of cluster management using the ClustWare®-Appliance. Thereafter Jörg Heydemüller, the representative of MEGWARE, briefly introduced the company and invited to a tour through the HPC-Center including the production and start-up department.
Experienced were exchanged and challanges discussed from start to finish. Thus, the evening concluded on the traces of August the Strong on Castle Augustusburg. We are very happy about the overwhelmingly positive feedback and the prospect of a new HPC User Meeting next year.
