Chemnitz, 27. January 2010 - There happend a lot!
February 1st 1990 was the day everything began. MEGware Computerservice
started running its business. We had to pay 15 mark to get our trading
licence, opened our office in the residential house and went on with
producing lots of personal computers in the cellar. Our company car, a
white-coloured Trabant, was waiting outside. Our customers were private
persons and resellers. The agricultural production cooperative
“Sonnenschein” was the first costumer of MEGware. They bought four
computers for 100,000 GDR Mark, which was an unbelievable amount of
money for that time. All the components we used for the production of
the computers we bought in the western part of Germany and transported
them to the east.
In the beginning of 1991 MEGware opened its first branch in Chemnitz on
the Muehlenstrasse. And this was followed by lots of other branch
openings. In the end there have been 35 shops with an amount of 200
employees in the year 1998. People queued in front of our shops and
cleared up our storage. We sold lots of computers, in some months about
5000 in total.
In 1999 there was a change in the market. Saturation of the market,
less updates in a longer period of time and more competitors have been
the reasons for this. MEGWARE needed a new idea, a new business area.
In the year 2000 MEGWARE built and delivered the Chemnitz Linux
Cluster, short CLiC, to the Chemnitz University of Technology. The team
of MEGWARE had no experience in the field of Compute Cluster
nevertheless the project was a big success. This supercomputer reached
number 126 in the TOP500 table, a table that shows the 500 most
powerful commercially available computer systems in the world.
Furthermore the CLiC was the world’s fastest supercomputer produced out
of conventional personal computer components.
And nowadays? There are Linux cluster of MEGWARE in institutions,
universities and in companies between Valencia and Bern as well as in
Nicosia, Rome, Zurich and Abu Dhabi and of course in Germany. In Saxony
MEGWARE delivers IT system solutions.
Today MEGWARE is a successful company in the region of Chemnitz. We
would like to celebrate this with our long-time-customers and business
partners, with our employees and all the persons, who supported us in
all the years. Regarding to our anniversary celebration we are going to
look back on the past but also in the future. We are expecting amongst
others Karl Noltze, president of the state directorate Chemnitz,
Barbara Ludwig, mayor of Chemnitz, Michael Lohse, president of Chamber
of Industry and Commerce in southwest Saxony, Hans-Joachim Wunderlich,
managing director of Chamber of Industry and Commerce in southwest
Saxony as well as Dr. Gunnar Grosse, founder and chairperson of the
KOMSA AG.
