amplitUDE, the new supercomputer at University of Duisburg-Essen, impresses with its high energy efficiency and an extraordinary heat recovery concept. The entire system is currently in test operation and will subsequently provide researchers mainly from the fields of engineering sciences, physics, chemistry and biology with additional resources for massive parallel computing power.
All the way to the power supplies, the compute partition is almost entirely hot water-cooled. Due to its high temperature level, the water heated by the servers will be utilized to support the district heating supply of the adjacent residential area. Compared to conventional air cooling systems, these systems require significantly less electricity, which leads also to considerable CO2 savings.
